PS3 + Dell 2407WFP by _pdra's portfolio

The new Sony PlayStation PS3 update 3.41 information is starting to leak out, and to a tough crowd. The features of the new update have been seen by many in the gaming circles as lacking, although perhaps we should give Sony a break. After all, the gaming industry is cut-throat and everyone has to try to stay within the same pace.

SoftSailor reports that the update 3.41 is available for download, although the features will not be able to be unlocked until a future date. This is a little disconcerting for some, and one commenter on another blog post noted that his gaming console continually froze up while he was trying to download the update. A review of the PlayStation update Web site did not yield me a link to download the update. I could not locate an official release date, either.

The real benefactor of the update appears to be Sony themselves. The PlayStation store has a new “you may like” feature which recommends products based on purchase history. This could be annoying to some users, who want to get in and get out of the store as quickly as possible with no distractions. However, those who don't have the time to peruse the literally thousands of video games and products available to them may appreciate these house recommendations.

There's also a rating system in the store, so that you can rate your products. You can also see what other gamers had to say about the title you are looking at, to avoid the whole purchasing a lesser-known title in the dark. I know from personal experience that sometimes it's the games that are not the big games that everyone talks about that are sometimes the best and most entertaining.

In addition to the PS3 update, there will be a psp firmware patch available by the end of the month. This patch is just to stabilize the software platform and increase security.

There's one missing feature that many gamers desire in the new update, and that is the capability to voice chat across more than one game. The text base chat feature is available, but for many the ability to talk across games would be a fun option.

Another caveat of the update is that your console will update itself in the future -meaning it will wake itself up, download the update, and then go back to sleep. It sounds convenient, only I could see this winding up to be a nightmare if there is something wrong with an update. By the time it's noticed, pretty much everybody's consoles will be affected.

Playstation for Kids games are very popular despite the new console releases (PS2, PS3, PSP). In fact, Playstation for Kids may even more popular specifically for kids than other formats and there are many games to choose from – but not all are appropriate for little ones to play.

If you're on the lookout for great Playstation for Kids games that are not only fun and highly rated, but are absolutely safe for young eyes and ears, here is a great list for you to choose from, coming into 2009:

Playstation Spyro the Dragon – This is an extremely fun game for kids, with simple controlling actions making it perfect for the youngest of beginning gamers. (More experienced kids like it too.) Help Spyro to rescue his friends from the grip of the evil Gnasty Gnorc, who has changed them all into crystals! There are a number of other “Spyro” games available, but this one is currently the most popular at the end of 2008, and kids absoutely have a great time playing it. Playstation Spyro the Dragon retails for around $40, but can be purchased for a nice discount from Amazon.com.

Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped for Playstation – Kids who have some gaming experience love this game and it is a great choice for kids just starting to play as well (due to simple controls). But – there is no lack of fun! This is the third release of “Crash Bandicoot” games for kids, and has a more diverse environment with larger levels and more playing opportunities. Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped has a retail price of around $40, but is usually available from Amazon.com for a nice markdown price.

Spiderman for Playstation – Spiderman has become known as one of the best superhero Playstation for Kids games around. It has fabulous graphics, kids can be “Spidey” – swing from the highest heights, scale walls skillfully and defeat evil forces. This is a good choice for kids who are either beginners or have more gaming experience. Spiderman for Playstation has a retail price of around $35, but can be purchased for less than half of that price (as of this writing) from Amazon Games.

Playstation Sponge Bob Square Pants: Super Sponge – Yes, Sponge Bob is still around and he is featured in one of the most popular Playstation for Kids game coming into 2009! Not only is Sponge Bob funny in this game, the story line revolves around him working to get autographs from his heroes, Barnacle Boy and Mermaid Man, which presents Mr. Square Pants with some very interesting and hysterical problems along the way. Playstation Sponge Bob Square Pants: Super Sponge has a retail price of around $30 but is usually available at a great discount price from Amazon.

Playstation Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone – Unlike some other “based on movie” games, this Playstation for Kids game is unique in itself, and offers some very enteraining gaming opportunities for kids. It's colorful with great sound effects, and focuses mainly on younger kids who are less experienced with the Playstation. (Older or more experienced gamers might consider it lacks challenge.) Playstation Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone has a retail price of around $50, but it normally can be found for less – available at Amazon.

All of these Playstation for Kids games are completely appropriate for kids – you won't need to worry about language or graphics – and kids won't have to sacrifice fun!

My PS3 "Gamer's Rig" by Vicky, Ken & Kiyomi

I did some searching for the Logitech Blutooth Keyboard for the PS3. I decided since money is tight to go online and look for the best price, and I found a good deal through Amazon.com for a used one for just under $40 shipped to my door.

At the time, amazon.com was also offering a credit card with a $30 credit for your first purchase when signing up for the credit card. So I effectively got this for under $10.

I was a little worried that being a used product that I would have blemishes, but for the price, I could not pass it up.

The keyboard shipped from the company out of California, and I live in Maryland. The product was shipped via USPS, and arrived in 3 days from shipment. I was excited that it got here that early, as I also ordered something from another web page at the same time, shipping UPS and it was not delivered for another two days, even though it was shipping from the same general location.

When I opened the keyboard, I was impressed to see that the keyboard still had the original plastic covering the shinny black finish of the keyboard. The only thing that made it even appear to be used, is the box was slightly damaged, the serial number on the back of the keyboard was crossed out with black permanent marker, and there where no batteries included.

I added the two double A batteries that where required to use the keyboard. I turned my PS3 on, went into the system controls, searched for the new blutooth device, it required me to type a key code that was presented on the screen on the keyboard to sync it with the PS3. It was easy, set-up and working without a problem in no time.

It is not the easiest to use to navigate the main menu on the PS3, and some of the button on the PS3 controllers and remote are not present, primarily the PS button, so you cannot use the keyboard to turn on your PS3 system.

The touch pad works great, it is a little smaller then the average laptop touch pad, but it works well, and smooth. If you are used to using a laptop touch pad, you will have no problem picking it up and using this.

The keyboard, types well, its very responsive and makes typing anything a lot easier. I have used it while surfing the Internet on my PS3, as well in the PS3 chat program. it is very comfortable and great to use. I have experience with multiple laptop keyboards, and it is very similar to many laptop keyboards. I actually feel it has a better response then the 'average' desktop keyboard (average being the cheap keyboards that ship with most build desktops)

Overall, even had I paid full price for the keyboard, I would have been more then happy with the purchase. Having my experience with the used keyboard, and the discount through Amazon, it was the deal of the summer. I highly recommend shopping around, if money is tight, because there are millions of deals out there, that you can find like this.

It's official, PlayStation just totally copied the Nintendo Wii with its new PlayStation Move motion controller. According to sales, it makes lots of sense for Sony to copy the Wii, but the PlayStation needs to steal more than motion gaming from the Wii.

Get a freakin' mascot already

Nintendo has been on a roll with its Mario franchise and Sega was raking in the cash with Sonic the Hedgehog, but what has Sony got? In Sony's defense, they did try to establish a mascot with Crash Bandicoot, but who checks in for a guy named Bandicoot? As long as Sony is on a copy the Nintendo Wii frenzy, they might as well steal the idea of adopting a mascot – Sackboy from Little Big Planet will do.

It's not all about the graphics

Back in the olden days of gaming, graphics were the big deal breaker and deciding factor when it came to buying a gaming console mostly because graphics sucked, but in this day and age, a gaming console needs more than special effects and grand graphics to make it. The Nintendo Wii came onto the gaming scene kicking both Microsoft Xbox and Sony PlayStation's butts; and it did it with inferior graphics. If Sony thinks they're just going to one-up the Nintendo Wii by doing a copy cat Wii-mote, they've got another thing coming. In order for the PlayStation to better its chances at competing with the Wii, Sony will need to steal quite a bit form the Nintendo Wii's gaming culture.

Help gamers better themselves

The Nintendo isn't great just because it has motion controlled gaming (which Sony is trying to steal), the Wii is sharing a large portion of the gaming world because they are helping gamers better themselves. The Nintendo Wii has a large archive of educational games and fitness games that the PlayStation can't overcome with its copy cat PlayStation Move motion controller. The PlayStation move is a great step towards making the PlayStation better, but Sony will need to do something about other niches the Wii fulfills or its copy cat PlayStation Move controller would have been made in vain.

Casual gaming matters

Sony can try to steal the motion controlled gaming style of the Nintendo Wii, but is has yet to copy the casual game style of the Nintendo Wii. The style of play done with the Wii Remote and PlayStation Move hardly matters, it's about the types of games played with the PlayStation Move and Nintendo Wii Remote that counts. The Nintendo Wii got the entire household into gaming; capturing parents, grandparents, kids, and people that would otherwise resist gaming. The Wii made gaming fun for those that weren't hardcore fans fun while the PlayStation remained nothing more than a hardcore gaming system.

In order for the copy cat PlayStation Move to make any sense for gamers, Sony will have to make more games for the casual gamer. Hardcore gamers are loyal, but they are few, whereas casual gamers aren't that picky, but there are many of them. Hardcore gamers won't appreciate the PlayStation Move and casual gamers won't want to play hardcore games on motion controlled gaming system. If Sony doesn't steal the casual game style of the Nintendo Wii, the PlayStation Move will piss of the hardcore and confuse the casual gamer.

As if Sony can't stop shooting holes in it's left foot, this weekend brings yet another bomb for Sony Corp. (NYSE: SNE) that ups the damage factor even further than before.

Yet this time, the damage control means screwing Europe — and the rest of the PAL-standardized electronics markets — with less-capable videogame hardware than that already released in the United States and Japan, five months after already having to wait for their launch day in the first place.

That's because today, Sony has announced officially that the PAL-format PlayStation 3 models, of which there already is only the more-expensive 60GB SKU (and not the cheaper, less-capable 20GB one), will be limited even further in capabilities, specifically in regard to backward-compatibility features.

The result: a complete hardware redesign that also shifts hardware-based emulation technology to more of a software-based solution, which also has the unfortunate side-effect of reducing compatibility with certain titles for the previous hardware platform — specificially in regard to the PS2, but also the PS1 as well (albeit to a much-smaller extent). The effects of the change are similar to that of Microsoft Corp.'s (NASDAQ: MSFT) Xbox 360 hardware in its software-based playback of titles for the original Xbox console.

In a statement issued Friday morning, Sony's European office — specifically Sony Computer Entertainment Europe — has admitted that Euro PlayStation 3's will embody “a new combination of hardware and software emulation”, meaning the console will still play most PSone games – but far fewer PlayStation 2 games than its overseas counterparts, at least initially.

Problem is, the news seems in fact to only add to Sony's recent woes, which originally started with battery recalls and the failures of portable device products and media formats has exploded into a series of horrors for the company as a whole. Indeed, the loss of portable music leadership to Apple, Inc.'s (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPod, combined with the uphill battle against both portable DVD players and Nintendo Co.'s (Pink Sheets: NTDOY) DS and Game Boy devices for both videodiscs and videogames concerning the company's PSP handheld. Even Nintendo beating the competition in the fixed-point console-for-in-home-gaming market, where the other Japanese videogame giant of the “big three” practically had its larger, more diversified electronics competitor completely “pwn'd” for five whole weeks with almost double the sales of its innovative Wii console compared to Sony's PS3, despite the latter being more powerful. Meanwhile, Sony could only get its newest videogame hardware out on time in the U.S. and Japan (albeit with extremely limited quantities), while the rest of the world was forced to wait for initial delivery to hit five months later.

Worse still is a report from IGN UK, which asks that “before our overseas cousins start getting too comfortable, it's worth highlighting that the news will likely have a knock-on effect, with any changes made to UK PS3s incorporated into future US and Japanese models.” However, Sony is currently “saying nothing, but if it's trying to cut costs it's likely the hardware changes will eventually be made across the globe.”

Similar to “Microsoft's Xbox 360 backward-compatibility strategy,” according to IGN, “Sony plans to release a series of firmware updates, via the PlayStation Network, that will increase the backwards compatibility of European consoles. Currently, Japanese and American PS3s can handle around 98 per cent of the PS2s catalogue but it's not known what per cent we can expect to see in Europe.”

IGN also reports, “David Reeves, president of SCEE, said Sony should not be concentrating on PS2 backwards compatibility, instead saying that 'company resources will be increasingly focused on developing new games and entertainment features exclusively for PS3, truly taking advantage of this exciting technology.'”

The conclusion: According to IGN, “Although one could argue that consumers will buy a PS3 to play PS3 games on, rather than going back to their PS2 collection, there's no overlooking the fact that once again it seems like Europeans are getting the rough end of the deal.” So true, yet so disappointing: although there is yet a statement to be made about what games are likely to be affected by this recent change, SCEE is promising to make a list available of just which games will work on or after the March 23 launch date.

Nevertheless, with Sony's latest shaft move, by then it may well be too late.

Does anybody want a PS3? by fozi999

The PlayStation, Xbox, and nintendo wii have been battling for best game console for some years now and with the addition of PlayStation Move the PS3 has gained a significant boost. Now that the PS3 has PlayStation Move, it may be the best game console to buy?

Each game console has its advantages and disadvantages. The Nintendo Wii has motion controls and casual game play but lacks the fast hardware and graphics of the xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The Xbox 360 has great graphics, media streaming, and excellent online game play, but has a 56% failure rate and the notorious Red Ring of Death. The PS3 doesn't have any major disadvantages like the Nintendo Wii or Xbox 360 and the addition of the PlayStation move has possibly given the PS3 the advantage it needed over other game consoles.

I own both the Nintendo Wii and Xbox 360 and I've always avoided buying the PS3 using the lack of solid exclusive games (like Wii Fit on the Wii and Halo 3 on the Xbox 360) and only having a Blu-Ray player as an excuse not to buy a PS3 over other game consoles. With the addition of the PlayStation Move, I've been forced to take a closer look at the PS3 and I now realize that it offers the best of both other game consoles and adds it own pizzazz into the mix, making it possibly the best of all 3 game consoles.

The PS3 has the great graphics, video streaming, and online game play of the Xbox 360 game console, but it doesn't suffer from the Xbox 360's Red Ring of Death and its online gaming is free, unlike the Xbox 360's Xbox Live (which costs $50 a year). The PS3 has better graphics and internal hardware than the Nintendo Wii and with the addition of the motion controlled game play of the PlayStation Move; the PS3 is now able to compete head on with the Nintendo Wii's casual and full body game play. In addition to what the other game consoles offer, the PlayStation 3 also serves best as a Blu-Ray player, has the best graphics, and is easily upgradeable without propriety hardware.

The PlayStation Move puts the game console “ball” in the PS3's hands and has brought everything together in a complete gaming package for gamers. The PS3 was losing the game console war, but thanks to the PlayStation Move, it might be making a run best game console on the market.

HD DLP PS3 OMG by mike_mchargue

Analysts recently reported that the nintendo wii outsold the Microsoft xbox 360 and Sony Playstation 3 in January. Analysts with market research groups such as NPD expect the Wii to grab more than a one-third share of the video game console market by 2008, surpassing the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.

The Wii selling more units in January than the Xbox 360 and PS3 by a large margin may be surprising enough for most video game aficionados. But the projections that Nintendo will grab a majority of the video game market by 2008 may be an even bigger surprise.

Sony has lead the video game console market since the release of the original Playstation in 1995, which had been previously lead by Nintendo with their NES and subsequent Super NES. Nintendo's main competition during that era was Sega with its Master System and Genesis systems. Sega's last entry into the video game hardware market was the Dreamcast.

The Dreamcast was released in 1999, 16 months before the Playstation 2. The hope for Sega was that the Dreamcast, considered ahead of it's time when released, would restore Sega's wavering reputation in the video game industry. Unfortunately it failed to gain enough momentum before the release of the Playstation 2.

After the last two Nintendo consoles failed to keep up with leaders such as Sony and Microsoft in market share, not many thought that Nintendo could continue to be a serious competitor in the video game console wars. But while Sega tried to compete with a more conventional system based on advances in technology and pure processing power, Nintendo's 'think outside the box' mentality has them going a different route. Nintendo plans to compete with innovation. This is certainly something we've seen recently with the nintendo ds handheld. A lot of video game experts and players saw the DS as possibly too gimmicky, but it certainly has proven to be a very good system with some great gameplay innovation.

With this innovation from Nintendo in mind, the following includes three reasons why the Nintendo Wii has a great shot at winning this new generation of video game console wars.

Lower Price
This is probably the most obvious reason why the Wii is selling so well right now and may continue to do so. At $249, the Wii is the most affordable of the next gen consoles. With the high price tags that new video game consoles are saddled with, it certainly helps to have the lowest price. Many think that once the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 drop in price and become more affordable to the average gamer the Wii will lose this advantage. While this is probably true to an extent, it doesn't mean that the Wii won't be able to hold onto its sales lead. Of course, the Wii's price will also drop, but price will be less of an issue when all three consoles are more affordable for everyone. This means that Nintendo can't expect to hold onto the Wii's sales lead based on price alone.

The Relative Stagnation of Progress in Gaming
While the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 have followed the conventional formula when releasing new consoles, Nintendo has gone a different route with the Wii. Both the Xbox 360 and PS3 are much more powerful systems than the Wii, but that doesn't necessarily make them superior. You could argue that the generational leaps in gaming have slowed down.

For example, the NES with it's improvements in graphics, side-scrolling action, and in depth gameplay was a huge leap over the gaming consoles that preceded it and brought the industry back from the dead. The next generation with the Super NES and Sega Genesis brought another big leap in both gameplay and graphics. The following generation, which included the Sony Playstation, also had an impressive leap in graphics and introduced true 3D gameplay. The ps2 and Xbox generation of consoles brought the usual graphical leap along with online gaming.

It seems that the leap made between generations in many ways is getting smaller. If you look at early Xbox 360 games, some seemed no better graphically than an original Xbox game(although that is to be expected to an extent when a system is first released). You could also argue that the only difference in gaming for the most part is improved graphics and processing power, with little change in how games are played. With the graphics not having the leap that many were hoping for, some gamers have waited to jump onto the next generation bandwagon.

While the graphical jump is even smaller for the Wii, that is not what Nintendo is focusing on. They are focusing on gameplay and new ways to play video games.

Innovation and the Ability to Attract a New Set of Gamers
This really ties into the previous reason. With the Wii, Nintendo is trying to provide another way to advance gaming. They are giving gamers another way to play. Most would agree that gameplay is more important than graphics, and that belief is a good thing for Nintendo because the Wii cannot compete graphically with the Xbox 360 or PS3. Their new controllers not only have the potential to revitalize the current base of hardcore gamers, it also has the potential to attract casual gamers and even attract new people to the world of gaming. Is this all just a gaming gimmick that will wear off? It's too soon to tell, but it certainly has breathed some much needed life into gaming.

The bottom line is that nobody can be sure who will eventually lead the new generation of video game consoles. Good arguments could also be made for both the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 as well. But when analyzing possible reasons why the Wii could end up the leader, it certainly makes sense that Nintendo could very well end up back at the top of the video game food chain.

My New PS3 by The Wuzz

There are many of us who own an Xbox 360/PS3. There are also many of us who have a lot of movies or television shows on our computer. While there are other methods to stream movies from the computer to your Xbox 360, they mainly require that you have Windows MediaExtender or a Windows MediaCenter service on your computer. In this tutorial I will show you an application and a method to prevent you from needing either. Another great advantage is you can watch just about any media type. It doesn't matter if it is an .avi, mpg, .mov or other media.

The application and free service I'm referring to is Orb. This application not only allows you to watch movies that are on your computer to your Xbox 360/PS3 but also allows you to watch movies, listen to music, and access your files from a remote destination computer. The first thing to do is to visit orb.com and set up an account. This will then provide you with a download to install on your computer.

Once you have Orb installed you may then open the application as you normally would in your operating system. This will start the service and put it on your task bar next to the clock. You will look for a green circle, then you'll right-click and select Control Panel. This should open the Orb control panel where you will provide the user account information that you set up earlier. You it will then select the Media Sources brown icon, and there are two different views to choose from. The simple view or tab is the easiest method of setting up your available media. From here you will choose the media that shall be shared to your Xbox 360/PS3. This can be done by pressing the “+” button. Now browse to the location of your media/movies/TV shows. Once you have highlighted the location, press OK and you will see it listed in the containing window.

You now need to enable Xbox 360/PS3 access. Press Media Servers red button and put a check in the box next to “Enable Media Server”.

You have now made an available resource of media to your Xbox 360/PS3. You may optionally select the General blue icon and select to “Start Orb when windows starts” or to “Run Orb when I'm not logged into windows”. These will ensure that your media is available when you are not logged in and when Windows starts. This can be useful if you will be watching movies when you are away from your computer.

To access your media from your Xbox 360/PS3 browse to the location on your console where you would watch movies. You shall see that there is now link to watch media from Orb.

Another advantage to this service is that it makes your media available to you from across the Internet from any Internet access and web browser. This however will not make media available to your Xbox 60/PS3. If you would like to access your movies/music/TV shows/documents remotely, simply log in to Orb.com, select Applications and what you would like to access.

Enjoy watching almost any media type remotely on your Xbox 360/PS3.
